Professor Farouk was a very sincere, honest, straightforward and hard working person with unprecedented strong common sense. He was very unbiased in making decisions and judgments. He could draw attention of students and keep them engaged for hours as he went on citing instances of the life style of people, economic and environmental conditions, cultural patterns, and social events, methods of entertainment and modes of speaking, across countries from his personal experience.

His Field of Interest is: Socio-economic Survey Research, Market Research, Economic Development, Marketing Practices in Bangladesh.

Schooling and Training: B.A. (1947) and M. A. (1948), Calcutta University, Ph.D. (1954), Dhaka University. Trained on Statistics (Indian Statistical Institute), Research Methodology (Institute of Social Research, Michigan State University), and Marketing Research & Management (Harvard Business School).

Fellowships: Nuffield Fellow (London School of Economics), Visiting Fellow (Institute of Developing Economics, Tokyo) and Rockefeller Foundation Fellow (Bellejio Study Center, Italy).

Teaching and Administration: Tought for about 49 years till his death. He held 22 dignified positions in various organizations. Notably, he was Head, Department of Commerce (1966-71), Dean, Faculty of Commerce, (1971-73), Chairman, Department of Management (1971-1974), Founder Chairman, Department of Marketing (1974-76), Member, Planning Commission (1976- 81), Chairman, Janata Bank (1982-85), Chairman, Jiban Bima Corporation (1982-85), Tresurer, D.D. (1986-1990), and Pro VC in-charge, D.U, for a while.

Research and Publications: About 30 books and research monographs were published by, among others, Bangla Academy, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Bureau of Economic Research, Bureau of Business Research, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics and Planning Commission. 48 papers were published in refereed journals at home and abroad and more than 50 popular articles in daily newspapers and periodicals.

Travels, Seminars and Conferences: Professor Farouk participated in seminars and conferences in different countries: India, USA, Algeria, France, West Germany, Geneva, The Philippines, Singapore, Colombo, Hanoi, Beirut, Peking and Brazil.
